Travel Advisory
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Travelling can be very stressful especially when you are going to a different time zone. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to this situation. To ensure you enjoy your trip to Ghana, the secretariat has outlined these measures as aid. These recommendations do not supersede any medical advice given by your physician.
COVID-19
All protocols on COVID-19 outlined by the Ghana government will be applied. They include the wearing of masks at all gatherings; temperature checks before entering various gatherings; regular handwashing; and the use of hand sanitizers. Regulations for air travel including testing and quarantine are available at the following websites: www.ghanahealthservice.org/covid19 and www.gh.usembassy.gov/ghana-covid-19-info.
Kindly acquaint yourself with the requirements and take them into account while making your travel plans.
Before you embark on your journey to Ghana
- Speak to a frequent visitor or a recent traveller to Ghana for their personal experiences.
- Prepare a personal checklist of items you will need especially your medications and stock on them.
- Confirm all immigration and customs requirements from the Ghanaian Mission in your country.
- Ensure that you have received all mandatory vaccinations and prophylactic treatments (especially anti-malarials which should be started before travelling).
- Purchase medical insurance to cover the period of your stay.
During your journey, these steps may help de-stress
- Always plan ahead and arrive at the airport earlier than scheduled as waiting time will be longer due to COVID-19 measures.
- Stay away from crowded zones to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Keep in mind you will be exposed to temperature fluctuations even within the cabin, so layers are a good idea to keep you from getting too cool or too hot.
- Drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration during your flight. Water and fruit juices are two of the best; a good rule of thumb is to drink eight ounces an hour. Avoid alcohol and caffeine; they both dehydrate the body.
- Keep your skin moist by splashing or spray-misting your face with water and use chapstick or other moisturizers to keep your lips from drying out.
- On long flights, make time to walk around the plane and stretch often.
STAYING SAFE AND HEALTHY DURING YOUR STAY
Ghana has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 26.7 (24.6-29.2) ºC and humidity range of 68-93%. In the month of July, temperatures can reach a high of 26.4 ºC and a low 23.3 ºC. Precipitation is around 75 with an average rainfall of 3 mm and humidity of 85 %.
In this climate, you will often sweat and become dehydrated if special precautions are not taken especially as you may have to walk in the scorching sun.
We strongly recommend that you
- Carry along bottled water at all times for rehydration. The city of Cape Coast has fresh coconuts in abundance; this fruit is a good alternative to drinking water.
- Carry along an umbrella or a rain jacket at all times due to the frequent rains in the month of July.
- Carry along sunscreen or any skin protective clothing due to the high UV index.
- Wear long sleeved clothing or otherwise apply insect repelling creams especially at night.
Precautions when buying and eating food
- Only purchase from recommended restaurants and eateries.
- Eat foods that are cooked and served hot
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables washed in clean water or peeled by yourself or processed in your presence.
- Avoid food items served by street vendors.
- Avoid raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish.
- Stay away from” Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game).
Warning
The Cape Coast beach line is tempting but dangerous for swimming. Do not attempt to swim in the sea in Cape Coast.
